Summer 2018

THE PEACE WALK AND CEREMONY

The Peace Walk on Hiroshima Day, August 6, is a long Montpelier tradition. Once organized by the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, it has for a good many years now been organized by Buddhist Peace Action Vermont (formerly the Vermont chapter of the Buddhist Peace Fellowship).

We walk in silence down State St., past the capitol building, to a field near the river by the High School. In a circle there we share thoughts on peace and war, and join in singing peace songs. At dusk, with chanting and drumming, we process to the river, to light candles on birch bark “boats” and launch them into the water for the spirits of all who have died in wars and with our aspirations for peace.
